LAVACA COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER
Hallettsville, TX

CLIENT

Lavaca County Medical Center (LCMC) is a 25 bed community hospital in south central Texas. LCMC provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services.

PROBLEM

LCMC’s business office manager resigned in 2002. Months of searching for a replacement candidate resulted in no qualified candidates that were willing to relocate to the area. Business office staff were motivated and had good attitudes, but lacked the experience to manage the business office.

RESOLUTION

LCMC identified an individual who was the admissions manager to become the new business office manager. This person had some management skills, but no business office experience. re|solution was engaged to mentor/train the former admissions manager to become a business office manager. During the first three months of the engagement, the on-site re|solution analyst managed the business office and had the former admissions manager shadow her to learn how to manage the business office. During the second three months of the engagement, the new business office manager managed the business office and the on-site re|solution analyst provided support and assisted in the management of the business office. During the second three month period, the re|solution analyst focused on writing policies, procedures and creating a reporting structure to use in managing the business office.

RESULTS

At the end of the six month engagement, LCMC had a newly trained business office manager who had the experience and the tools to effectively manage the business office. During the six month engagement, LCMC underwent a difficult system conversion. Cash remained relatively steady even with the turnover and system conversion problems. The new business office manager continues to call the re|solution analyst with questions as they arise in areas that she does not have the requisite experience. The new business office manager knows that she can receive assistance with just a phone call from someone who knows the LCMC system.
